Diesel vs premium diesel: is it worth paying more?

Fuelroo guide · updated 2026-10-07

Many stations sell two diesels: regular diesel and a premium diesel (sold under names like Vortex Diesel, Ultimate Diesel or V-Power Diesel). Right now premium diesel averages about -0.3¢ a litre more than regular diesel in NSW.

What's different?

Premium diesels usually add extra detergents and additives that aim to keep injectors clean, and some claim a higher cetane number for smoother combustion. Both grades must meet the same Australian diesel fuel standard.

Does your vehicle need it?

For most diesel cars, utes and trucks, regular diesel is what the manufacturer specifies, and it works fine. Some drivers use premium diesel occasionally as a cleaning treatment. Check your owner's manual: if it doesn't call for premium, regular diesel is usually the better value.
