E10 is regular unleaded petrol blended with up to 10% ethanol. It's sold at most service stations in NSW and Queensland (where retailers have to offer it) and in many other places. Right now E10 averages 4.2¢ a litre less than Unleaded 91 in NSW.
Does E10 use more fuel?
Ethanol has less energy per litre than petrol, so a car running on E10 typically uses slightly more fuel: commonly quoted figures are a few percent more. How much depends on your car and how you drive.
When is E10 the cheaper choice?
As a rule of thumb, E10 saves money when it's at least about 3 to 4% cheaper than Unleaded 91. At around 230¢ a litre for unleaded, that's a gap of roughly 7 to 9 cents. If the gap is smaller, the extra fuel you use can cancel out the saving. Try both for a few tanks and compare how far you go.
Can my car use E10?
Most petrol cars sold in Australia in the last few decades can use E10, but not all. Some older cars, many motorbikes, boats and small engines like mowers shouldn't use it. Check the label inside your fuel flap or your owner's manual, or ask your car's manufacturer. Never put E10 in a car that needs premium unleaded (95 or 98).
E10 vs E85
E85 is a very different fuel (up to 85% ethanol) for specially designed "flex-fuel" vehicles only. Don't use it in a normal petrol car.
