Fuel is one of the biggest running costs of a car, and the price difference between stations in the same suburb is often 20 cents a litre or more. These habits add up to real savings.
Pay less per litre
- Compare before you fill. The cheapest station nearby can save $5 to $15 on a tank. Fuelroo shows every station's official price, updated every 10 minutes.
- Count the drive. A slightly cheaper station 10 km away can cost more once you count the fuel to get there. Fuelroo's "Best value" ranking does the maths.
- Time it with the cycle. In the big cities, fill up when prices have been falling, not right after a jump (price cycles explained).
- Set a price alert and let the price come to you.
- Don't buy premium you don't need (is premium worth it?).
- Consider E10 if your car can use it and it's cheap enough (E10 vs 91).
- Check discount dockets and memberships, but make sure the "discount" price is actually lower than the cheapest station nearby.
Use less fuel
- Keep your tyres at the right pressure. Under-inflated tyres increase fuel use and wear.
- Drive smoothly. Gentle acceleration and braking and steady speeds use noticeably less fuel.
- Lose the extra weight and drag: empty roof racks and heavy loads you don't need.
- Don't idle for long. If you're parked and waiting, switch off.
- Keep up servicing. A well-maintained engine runs more efficiently.
